Poems for My Family: My Grandparents
Like the growth rings of a tree, each new generation expands your reach.
I would give anything in this world to play in your shadow again.
To talk of the things I have done in this life.
To lose track of time in your warm embrace.
To eat one more world-famous cherry pie.
To catch any wisdom you might have for the next phase of my life.
Like a boxer’s punch, each swing leaves you stunned.
I would give anything in this world to show your son’s lasting legacy.
To show you the caring humans he helped shape.
To exist as the personification of his love for his family.
To execute a silent protest against the hand of your cruelty.
To send you crawling away in silence, seeking forgiveness.
Like an unyielding force, we still feel the full force of your winds.
I would give anything in this world to pull our corners of the map closer.
To recount my gifts in your presence.
To search the canyons for what we have become and who we were.
To learn each other on a deeper level.
To live in some of your countless family stories.
Like a lighthouse beckoning us from the sea, you pulled this family toward safer shores.
I would give anything in this world to show your daughter’s lasting legacy.
To show you what her daughter and sons have made of this world.
To exist as the personification of her love for her family.
To illustrate a silent victory fought for your love.
To send you away in silence, wishing you pride.
Be good to each other,
Nathan
