Cinephile No. 550 “Concussion”

January 19, 2016 in Cinema

After seeing "Concussion" a couple of things are true for me: no son of mine is playing football and Will Smith deserved an Oscar nomination. I think we all know football is a violent game. Football players can expect broken limbs or torn muscles, but advanced neurological diseases probably never crosses the mind of a player the first time he laces up his cleats. This movie reveals the real trauma behind America’s favorite game. The uncovering of that truth and the pursuit of recognition from the league is led by brilliant performance from Will Smith. Of course, we all know by now that he and other actors of color received no nominations for this year’s awards. Without a doubt, Mr. Smith deserved recognition and I would challenge any voter who thought otherwise.

Be good to each other,

-Nathan
